SIGNAL AND TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT

Gwili Railway Signal Box

The present line is operated with the “one engine in steam” system.

To allow the Bronwydd Arms to Carmarthen section to be signalled, the Department will install the “Electric Train Token” system.

As passenger trains have not run south of Bronwydd since the 20th February 1965 a safe signalling method will be installed for the reopening of the line.

This will include the resignalling of the south end of Bronwydd Arms station, signage of an ungated minor road crossing and installing a new system to control the Carmarthen station.

Work has started at Bronwydd Arms and its hoped that it will be complete by early 2011.
This has included relocating signals, installing additional electrical circuitry and relocking the Bronwydd Arms Signalbox leverframe.

The level crossing was originally protected by two long gates which were mannually opened and closed for each train by the signalman. These were in existance until they collapsed about 1985.
Four gates from Llandybie on the Central Wales line have protected the crossing since then.
These were to be operated from a capstan wheel inside the signalbox but this did not take place.
To ease operation and maintenance the decision has now been been made to remove the four gates and replace them with two new long gates.
These will allow the crossing to revert to what it looked like in 1890.
