Work started on the 1st August on the rebuilding of Bridge No 6. This is half way between Bronwydd Arms and Carmarthen North. Its repair has awaited the appointment of an Independent Competent Person to oversee the work and the production of engineering drawings to work to.
The bridge was built c 1872 to replace the broad gauge bridge of 1860. It was made of side girders supporting a corrugated wrought iron deck on which the ballast was retained.
The repair would require the replacement of the metal deck with a reinforced concrete one but as much as possible of the stonework and side girders would be retained to reflect its original condition.
Work has now removed all the metalwork off the bridge and exposed the stone and brickwork for the first time since the 1870’s.
